A Guide to Bath and Basin Wastes

Waste

How they operate

Standard bath and basin wastes operate very simply by having a chrome plated brass or plastic plug fixed by a chain to the basin or bath, this plug is simply placed into the waste plughole when you wish to fill the basin or bath, and removed when you wish to empty it again. Basin pop up wastes operate with a system of rods and levers that cause a metal plug to rise or fall, opening or closing the plug hole. With a Bath pop up waste a control handle is placed over the bath overflow hole and this is connected to a metal plug by a cable that causes the plug to rise or fall, when the handle is turned.

Production

Bath and basin wastes can be made from a variety of different materials but generally will comprise of a mix of brass, zinc alloy and plastic that all combine to make a small but important accessory for your new bathroom.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Many household cleaners contain abrasives and chemical substances, and should not be used for cleaning plated or plastic fittings. These finishes should be cleaned with a mild washing up detergent or soap solution, and then wiped dry using a soft cloth.

Types of Wastes

Bath and Basin wastes are divided into two main styles: Standard waste, plug and chain and Pop up wastes. Both styles are available for Baths or Basins and the style you choose will depend upon your basin or bath and your own personal preference.

Standard Basin Waste

The standard basin waste is the most common style of basin waste, and has been around for many years. It comprises of a plug fastened to the end of a chain, which in turn is fixed to a small hole in the basin. Standard basin wastes are only suitable for basins with two tap holes.

How to clean standard basin wastes: We strongly recommend that all bathroom brassware is cleaned only with warm soapy water followed by rinsing, and if necessary drying with a soft cloth. A propriety chrome cleaner can also be used, however this substance is abrasive, so product instructions should be followed with care. Plated products are very vulnerable to acid attack and some household cleaners including strong disinfectants. These materials may have a varying effect on the surface of the products from black spots and streaks, to pitting of the surface, neither of which can be removed.

Standard Bath Waste

The standard bath waste is the most common style of bath waste, and is the bath waste that many of you will already have fitted to your bath. There is a plug fastened to the end of a chain, which in turn is fixed to an overflow grate, which fixes to the overflow hole drilled in the bath. A standard bath waste will almost always be supplied with a plug, chain, overflow pipe and overflow cover. A standard bath waste is therefore normally known as a combined bath waste and overflow.

The plug is operated using a lever and rod mechanism, that is usually supplied with a monobloc basin tap. The metal plug rests on a horizontal rod that is connected through a small bracket arrangement to a vertical rod. The plug is opened by pushing the vertical rod downwards, which then causes the horizontal rod to rise lifting the plug. The plug is closed by lifting the vertical rod up allowing the weight of the metal plug to close the waste.

Bath Pop Up Waste

With bath pop up wastes a cable is connected from a control handle, usually at the overflow point of the bath, to the a metal plug. As you turn the control handle the cable moves the plug into position to open or close the waste fitting. The control handle also acts to cover the overflow hole of the bath, creating a very neat, modern solution.
