Creating The Perfect ‘Spathroom’
With Google searches for “Spa bathroom ideas” up by 650% in the last month, spa-inspired spaces are proving to be a leading trend when it comes to bathroom design in 2024.
With searches up in such a big way, we thought we’d explore exactly why there’s a growing desire for ultimate relaxation at home, and which areas of the bathroom to focus on when transforming one into a ‘Spathroom’.
Self-care has become an increasing focus for consumers in the last couple of years and this has been noticeably influential when it comes to interior design choices.
With people still yearning for a sense of escapism in their homes that are now busy and multi-functional due to the long-lasting effects of homeworking, design aesthetics like ‘Spathroom’ are being leaned into as a way of building in-house sanctuaries that promote wellbeing and relaxation.
For the perfect spa-inspired space, I’d recommend focussing on four key elements of the design to stay on trend – materials, colour, layout and lighting.
4 Key “Spathroom” Design Tips
1 – Keep It Natural
Natural materials are synonymous with spa settings and can help with feeling grounded.
From wooden flooring and slate tiles to stone basins and marble feature walls, there are so many ways to bring natural materials into a bathroom depending on the budget and scale of your design or renovation project.
Wood panelling is a particularly popular bathroom feature right now that fits perfectly into the ‘Spathroom’ aesthetic.
It can be DIYed and will add raw texture to a space. When using these materials it’s important to maintain their natural form as much as possible for an authentic look, so avoid products that have been treated heavily.
2 – Colours for mood
Colour is key when it comes to setting the tone for a spa bathroom.
Whilst white is the usual option for creating a serene look, it’s important to consider that bathrooms rich in colours can provide a spa effect too, it just comes down to choosing the right ones.
Tap into 2024’s leading shades of mid blues and greens as these are ideal for bringing tranquillity to a space with their calming qualities.
Alternatively, for a mood-boosting palette, opt for more energising hues of terracotta, yellow or even pink.
Depending on the size of a bathroom, people may be cautious of using too much colour to avoid overwhelming the space so its important to consider different ways to do this.
3 – Luxe Layouts
The layout of a bathroom is another area that should be a key a priority when designing a ‘Spathroom’.
Making the most of a space plays a big role in the functionality of a spa-like bathroom, ensuring that it offers the most relaxing experience.
For larger bathrooms, I’d always recommend working a freestanding bath into the plans for enhanced comfort and style.
Where freestanding baths are not an easy option, pay attention to the shower and consider wet rooms or walk-ins.
Using a single pane of glass creates the illusion of more space and seamless lines you’d find in a luxe spa.
Fluted glass is a growing trend for bathrooms and perfect for a spa aesthetic.
A smaller change to focus on when it comes to layout and functionality is decluttering.
Keep accessories minimal and store away the bulk of any self-care or cleaning products.
Leave only the essential items that match the style of the room on show for that hotel feel.
4 – Atmospheric lighting
Lighting in a spa bathroom should be both practical and atmospheric.
For main lighting, dimmable spotlights offer full brightness for undertaking self-care rituals and indulging in bath time hobbies like reading.
They’re dimmable abilities also mean that lighting levels can be brought down with ease for a quick mood switch-up for full relaxation.
Other lighting options for a ‘Spathroom’ include mirror LEDs which can create a focal point above vanities for an enhanced skincare experience or scented candles and wax burners to bring a sense of warmth to the space.
