When it comes to bathroom design, opting for a traditional look offers the perfect solution for those who aren’t a fan of clean lines and contemporary design. Traditional bathrooms don’t have to look dated, instead think beautiful freestanding claw-foot baths, pedestal basins and crosshead taps – all features of a classic and timeless bathroom that will look just as good 10 years down the line as they will now. So, if you want to create a bathroom that will stand the test of time, these 10 traditional bathroom ideas are sure to inspire you.
At the top of our traditional bathroom ideas list is the claw-foot freestanding bath.
Claw-foot freestanding baths are the ultimate in traditional luxury. If you have a large enough bathroom, position the bath in the middle of the room for a stunning statement. If you don’t have the space to do this, you can create a focal point by placing the bath against the wall with patterned wallpaper for a backdrop.
When it comes to traditional freestanding baths, there are two main styles to take your pick from – roll top and slipper. Freestanding slipper baths are originally from a Victorian design, and feature one end that’s higher than the other so you can enjoy a relaxing and indulgent bathing experience. Roll top freestanding baths are available in single and double-ended designs. They feature an edge which curves at the top, providing a distinctive rounded effect around the edge of the bath.
If you want to fit a shower over a freestanding bath, then you’ll need to fit a curved metal shower ring. This isn’t just an essential item for when you want to shower over your freestanding bath, it will also add an authentic traditional touch too. Most shower curtain rings feature a chrome finish that blends seamlessly in with any bathroom décor.
Traditional bathroom furniture is just perfect for adding elegance and essential storage space to any bathroom. The Milano Edgworth furniture collection includes a great range of traditional vanity units, storage cabinets and back to wall toilet units for a complete coordinated look. There’s a choice of finishes to choose from including Ivory and Anthracite. Ivory creates a classic look, while Anthracite is ideal for adding a dramatic touch to your bathroom space. The vanity units come in a range of sizes, ranging from 600mm to 1200mm. If you have the space and to create a luxury look, opt for the double vanity unit, which includes twin basins and incorporates plenty of room for toiletries and spare towels.
Pedestal basins are perfect for traditional bathrooms. They feature simple lines and a classic design that won’t date. Available in various sizes and shapes, a pedestal basin effortlessly hides unsightly pipework from view. If you have enough room, fit two basins side by side for a touch of luxury, and team with traditional mirrors to complete the look.
Washstands are ideal for enhancing a sense of space, and they can transform a plain basin into something more interesting. Why not place a wicker basket underneath the basin so you can keep toilet roll or spare towels neatly stored away yet easily accessible? A washstand also works well when teamed with traditional taps and metro wall tiles.
There may be a lot of love for waterfall taps right now, but classic cross-head or lever taps instantly add traditional style, and they work really well with washstands and pedestal basins. Cross-head or lever bath shower mixer taps complete a roll top freestanding bath perfectly, and the shower attachment allows you to easily rinse and clean around the bath.
There may be a big trend for toilets with hidden or boxed-in cisterns, but a high level toilet provides the best way to get that authentic traditional look. A high level toilet is where the cistern is fitted high up on the wall and is connected to the pan with a long, chrome flush pipe. The flush is operated with a pull chain. The cistern needs to be fitted to a solid wall, or a wall that’s been reinforced to ensure it can bear the weight, so make sure to take this into consideration before buying.
Apron shower heads, rigid riser kits and exposed shower valves are all great choices for traditional bathrooms. Apron shower heads feature a classic design and deliver a refreshing rainfall effect. In addition to a fixed shower head, it’s always a good idea to fit a slide rail kit with a hand shower, so you can easily rinse around your shower enclosure or bath.
