After much anticipation, Pantone Colour of the Year 2018 has finally been announced as Ultra Violet. Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future. It’s a colour that’s symbolic of the night sky and the intrigue of what lies ahead.
“The Pantone Colour of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute.
Purple shades are also symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality and artistic brilliance. Musical icons such as Prince and David Bowie brought shades of purple to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. The depth of Ultra Violet encourages individuals to push creative boundaries. From an historical point of view, there’s always been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to purple, and it’s a colour associated with mindfulness practices. For example, purple-toned lighting is often used in meditation areas.
As well as influencing graphic design, fashion and beauty, Pantone’s Ultra Violet can also be used to transform any interior into a self-expressive space, or it can help tone down a room when teamed with more subtle colours.
Ultra Violet adds spice and brightness, and you can introduce this colour to your home with a piece of artwork or by creating an accent wall. It makes a statement in both modern and traditional spaces, and can add elegance or boldness.
Pantone have created eight different colour palettes that feature Ultra Violet – perfect if you’re stuck for ways on how to use this colour. The versatile palettes cover all colours bases including brights, deep hues, pastels, mid-tones and metallics.
Here’s three of our favourite Pantone colour palettes using Ultra Violet.
Purple Haze
Perfect for creating a sense of calm, this palette features hazy and smoky hues.
Intrigue
Evoke a sense of mystery with this palette of blues, greens, with a silver and pale gold metallic.
Attitude
This bright colour palette is great for making a statement. It features bold colours including Citrus, Raspberry and Hawaiian Surf.
Violet is the colour of imagination and spirituality, and it allows us to get in touch with our deeper thoughts.
Violet represents the future, the imagination and dreams. It contributes to mental balance and stability, peace of mind, and is a link between the spiritual and physical worlds.
It’s a colour that promotes creativity, and is unique, individual and independent. Writers, poets and artists are all inspired by violet, and its mystery. It is also associated with royalty, and creates an impression of luxury and wealth.

Violet may not be the first colour that comes to mind when it comes to decorating or designing a bathroom, but if used carefully, it’s a great colour for adding a touch of luxury and decadence to this space.
Feng shui dictates that violet is a high vibration colour that should be used in moderation, as it can easily overpower a room. For this reason, it’s a good idea to use violet as an accent colour to set the tone of the room, while keeping it classy at the same time.
If the décor in your bathroom is neutral, limiting violet to just a few accent items is enough to add some depth. Violet towels, a bath mat and accessories are all you need to brighten up a pale scheme.
Rather than opt for classic black and white, choose violet and grey instead for a contemporary twist. Fit a violet blind, and combine with light grey towels and accessories for a pared-down elegant look. You could even replace a white radiator with a pale grey model such as the Milano Capri Light Grey Designer Radiator – available in horizontal and vertical styles to suit your bathroom design.
Violet is a fantastic colour for colour blocking, and it will make a stunning statement in any bathroom. For a smart, modern look, introduce gold touches, but keep the rest of the space white.

If you don’t like the idea of committing to tiles or paint, towels and accessories provide the perfect way to experiment with this colour, more so if your bathroom is a neutral canvas.
Violet works well with soft greys and blues. Tie the scheme together with a piece of artwork and bath mat that feature these colours. Enhance the colour scheme further with simple accents such as candles or a vase.
You can get away with using violet throughout the bathroom if you use a variety of pale shades. Limit a dark shade of violet to the blind, and opt for a much paler shade on the walls and across the towels and accessories for a wash of colour.
